eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Hi all,

the "Initial brainstorming for an eLua IDE" is started here:

http://tracker.eluaproject.net/projects/elua/wiki/TheLuaIDE

Suggestions and comments are welcome,
thanks,

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Hi! I have just posted something there and I will reproduce it here just because I don't think this wiki is the best tool for brainstorming...

[Teo] Hi guys. I really support this idea and I would like to give my opinion in some topics, but I really feel this is not the right tool for discussions.
Do you all know the discussion tool inside Google Docs? (I think Dado doesn't and he will love it :)
You can create a google docs with some text and discuss just a specific piece of information until it's ok.
It's much much more organized than righting your name before each comment here...

Good, thank you Téo and Nuccio for the alternatives.
I think that the best place for the brainstorming is right here on the list. The conclusions and main directions can then be posted on the tracker wiki to guide the development.

For a "bigger" proposition and brainstorming, like the IDE topic with it's many aspects and sub-topics, the list seems to be limited and a GDoc can indeed be helpful.
Let's try to keep it and hear some more opinions on this too.

Indeed, I think it is nice :)
But the comments are not tightly linked to the related sentences on the text (at least until I could see on a quick look) and leaves the comments a little confusing.

It's much much more organized than righting your name before each comment here...

If the comments are not directly related with the piece of text they refer to, I'm afraid it is not "much more organized" than what we had before.
Am I missing something here ?

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Hi all,

I’ve worked a lot with python previously and I recommend a lot to take a look at this IDE.

http://code.google.com/p/spyderlib/

I think it is well designed, plugin based and cross platform.

So must be easy to add things for lua…

It supports also graphical display of curves with matlplotlib.

Regards,

Laurent

Thank you Laurent !
I think people are trying to avoid Python because of speed performance issues but it is certainly worth of checking this.
You can also add your notes directly to the GDoc here

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

I haven't been able to keep up with you guys for the past few months and
my embedded project is on hold but I was just about to recommend this,
James mentioned it in the Floss weekly interview.

I subscribed to the textadept mailing list for a while, it's nice but it
did not end up a good fit for me. I started a thread on the main Lua
list, Textadept reviews (was Lua IDE), it ended up with about 21 posts,
it might be useful, I can forward the emails to anyone who wants them or
you can view them online.

I started a thread on the main Lua list, Textadept reviews (was Lua IDE), it ended up with about 21 posts, it might be useful, I can forward the emails to anyone who wants them or you can view them online.

Thank you Patrick.
Please add an link to your Textadept thread where it is mentioned on our GDoc if you can.

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Hello list,
We continue our brainstorming on the eLua IDE on the GDoc that was created for it and on the tracker.
Please feel free to discuss anything here on the list too and to suggest other channels as well. We want to keep it going and come out with a community-generated specification for an initial implementation as soon as possible.

Thanks
Dado

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Maybe it would be a good idea to modify the Arduino desktop client for
the initial IDE for eLua.  It seems easy enough for one guy to do it
for his product (http://pjrc.com/teensy/teensyduino.html) so why not
us?  I'm sure we would move away from it after awhile.

Is our goal to produce the best text editor, syntax highlighter, and
so one.  I think the project should start developing features that are
unique to eLua and not the foundational graphic parts.  Are we missing
any parts not directly related to the future IDE?

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Hi,

On Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 11:13, Mike King <[hidden email]> wrote:
Maybe it would be a good idea to modify the Arduino desktop client for
the initial IDE for eLua.  It seems easy enough for one guy to do it
for his product (http://pjrc.com/teensy/teensyduino.html) so why not
us?  I'm sure we would move away from it after awhile.

This was one of my first suggestions at the very start of the idea.
It not only seems relatively easy to do but it would have the advantage of offering something that is widely known and widespread, although somewhat limited and seen as buggy by some others.
For some reason (that I can't remember now) it was disconsidered.

Is our goal to produce the best text editor, syntax highlighter, and
so one.  I think the project should start developing features that are
unique to eLua and not the foundational graphic parts.  Are we missing
any parts not directly related to the future IDE?

These features (syntax highlight, code completion, integrated help and a few others being highlighted on the GDoc) are proving to be strongly requested by the community. We don't need to have everything from the first version but it would be nice to go with an architecture/framework that allow us to have them in the future, without too much effort to refactor what was not designed to support it from the start. I don't know of any limitations of the Arduino IDE in this sense. It is Open Source, widely known and accepted and I think it should be considered as an option for our IDE.
The fact of being based on Java and having a GPL licence may be a barrier though.

Thanks for this Mike.

Best
Dado

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

Have we defined the high level goals/philosophy of the project?  For
one of my larger projects I have done, I developed a philosophy to
guide me in future decisions.  I decided I was making a "tool" and not
a "solution."  This meant to me that I wouldn't add features that
would place restrictions on how the user used the program.  I
eventually had to add such features but they were options that could
be turned off.  This may not make sense for this project but I think
we can create an outline of what the program will and will not do at a
higher level than specific features.

Re: eLua IDE "brainstorming"

On Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 11:49, Mike King <[hidden email]> wrote:
Have we defined the high level goals/philosophy of the project?

Not widely and publicly and we should do this.
I've created a section for a "Roadmap" on the new site and I think it is a good place to have it.

 For
one of my larger projects I have done, I developed a philosophy to
guide me in future decisions.

Thanks a lot for the guidelines.
I think this is the way to go and the best way to make a truly community-oriented project.

The tools we have to develop such a Roadmap are the same we've been trying for the other specifications:
- A thread here on the list
- A page on the Wiki
- An entry or/and a wiki page on the Tracker
- A Google Document with side-comments

Any other suggestions are welcomed, as long as it promotes community collaboration.

<OT>
I'm still in NYC, strugling with some (minor and not worrying) health issues and I'll have to stay for one more month but I expect to have more time to help with this and other important pending topics on the project on these next few weeks.
I'll be out in vacations by the end of august and september, hopefully traveling with my wife in Europe. If anyone is ready for a beer here or on the old world, just let me know :)

I'll start with the following:
- The IDE should be "lightweight."
- The IDE shouldn't load things that won't be used.
- The IDE and tools should be "cross platform" (Win, Mac, and Linux/UNIX).
- The IDE should work well with other supporting programs (ex.
terminal emulators and compilers).
- Features should be available through a command line interface
whenever possible.
- We should try to incorporate/reuse code from other projects instead
writing new code whenever possible.
- We should strive to write code in Lua instead of C when possible.

The current tool where we're maintaining the IDE-related proposals, brainstorming and conclusion is this GDoc.
Could you please add these nice proposition topics to it, in case you or anybody else suggest a better place to have them ?

Thanks, they are getting better already and there is nothing to be worried about. I just wanted to mention and share among friends here.

Best

I think that document needs to be reorganized like tcmichals
mentioned.  The document appears to have a list of features which is
good.  I think it should be structured at the top level as a list of
high-level goals and under which the corresponding features supporting
that goal.  But first, a list of goals needs to be determined.  For
example, I believe we would all agree we are not creating another
Eclipse or Emacs.  This would be a goal and under that goal would be a
list of things to avoid to keep the IDE small.
